The design and assemblage of an automatic growth support system for sprouts production in Space are presented. This work was part of the project named SAYSOY — Space Apparatus to Yield SOYsprouts — that was funded within the Education program of ESA and was selected for the flight onboard of a Foton-M2 Russian Capsule. The SAYSOY hardware is fully automatic and does not require any external control signals. It can be programmed to prime seed germination through water injection and stop seedling growth by means of a chemical fixative. Biological and engineering tests have been successfully conducted during all the phases of the experiment. Simulations of fluid dynamics have been performed to study the flows of air, water and fixative required by the experiment. Methods for the biological sterilization of all the hardware components and of seeds have been developed. Extensive tests, including 2 mission sequences, were carried out. After recovering of the capsule, the upper layer of the hardware can be removed and transferred to the laboratories for subsequent biometry and microscopy analyses. The electronic card can be connected to a computer to download data about temperature and humidity acquired with specific sensors during the flight and stored onboard. These data are used to plan the control experiment in 1 -g or simulated microgravity (clinostat) on Earth.
