Micro and Nano Technologies (MNT) can offer important benefits for space missions due to their low requirements for mass, power and volume. A critical event before the acceptance of MNT is the flight qualification of the equipment. This is currently a bottle-neck as the number and frequency of flight opportunities does not correspond to the development efforts for MNT. This lack of flight opportunities stands in contrast to the very low resources that are required for launching and testing MNT. The Rubin (German for ruby) MNT Testbed is here proposed as a frequent-flyer option for on-orbit verification of MNT. The low mass and volume of the Rubin minimises the accommodation impact on the launch vehicle and enables thereby a high frequency of launches. Communication with the testbed is performed via the Orbcomm network providing global message based communication with the payload. This paper describes the characteristics of Rubin as an MNT testbed and provides an outlook of the future launch opportunities. Furthermore the paper contains a description of first candidate technologies to be flown on Rubin and an outline of a microsatellite mission making extensive use of new technologies is provided.
