This paper presents an approach for magnetic only attitude control on a Low Earth Orbit. The specific application is the PRISMA mission. PRISMA will implement Guidance, Navigation and Control strategies for advanced formation flying and rendezvous experiments. The mission is a test bed that consists of two spacecraft called MAIN and TARGET, where TARGET will be the reference satellite for the experiments performed by MAIN. The TARGET 3-axis attitude control design meets two main challenges. On the one hand, it is controlled with magnetic torque rods only, with neither additional momentum wheel nor gravity gradient boom. On the other hand, operations are not limited to follow the local orbital frame but also multiple attitude references. It shall have a robust and efficient safe mode, a zenith or sun pointing mode, as well as a tumbling mode, mimicking a non cooperative spacecraft. This paper presents the approach retained for magnetic attitude control of the TARGET spacecraft in order to fulfil the mission requirements. It details the attitude estimation, guidance and control algorithms, and describes the way it has been implemented in the PRISMA mission. Simulation results are presented to validate the technical choices and evaluate the whole attitude control system performance.
