摘要

Solar sail technology could significantly enhance the transportation infrastructure for interplanetary space exploration missions by exploiting the quasi unlimited and freely available space resource of sunlight for primary propulsion. By making use of this innovative means of low-thrust propulsion, extended missions in our solar system and beyond, requiring delta velocities of several tens of kilometers per second, could become possible. Solar sails could enhance or even enable deep-space science missions with such high-propulsion energies, in contrast to the more traditional means of space propulsion.
