Flight experimentation is a key element in the development of the next-generation launcher to control the technical risk. Within the framework of the German ASTRA program, this need was addressed by the Phoenix project. The Phoenix 1 flight test vehicle was designed to demonstrate the unpowered horizontal landing of a representative, winged reusable launch vehicle (RLV) configuration. The shape of the test vehicle was derived from the suborbital RLV concept Hopper. Three successful automatic landing flight tests were completed in May 2004. This paper gives an overview of the mission, design, and qualification tests, as well as the three test flights and a first look at the flight data. An outlook to future flights, including an extension to supersonic flights, is also provided. In parallel, industrial-funded concept studies were performed on a rocket-propelled RLV demonstrator concept Phoenix 2, a vehicle to perform multiple test flights from subsonic to high supersonic speeds. These studies will be continued in the framework of the European Future Launchers Preparatory Program. This paper summarizes the current status of an industrial study of such a RLV reusability demonstrator vehicle and discusses three different potential system concepts and their performances.
