Orbital Sciences Corporation's reference Orbital Space Plane (OSP) is a new spacecraft design that was developed under contract to NASA for the Space Launch Initiative (SLI) Program. The SLI requirements for the OSP include providing crew escape capability during all phases of flight, transporting astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS), and returning ISS crew members to Earth as part of normal crew rotation or in the event of an on-orbit emergency. Orbital's OSP, referred to as a Blended Lifting Body (BLB), is designed to be fully responsive to NASA's SLI technical and programmatic requirements. This paper describes the OSP design challenges and solutions and provides an overview of the key characteristics of the OSP design.
