For two days in July, the aerospace world held its collective breath as two billionaire entrepreneurs pitched themselves into space from the desert sands of the southwestern USA. Both men were supremely confident that they would return safely - and they did; after decades of development and many millions of dollars spent on flight testing, neither of them was leaving anything to chance. The media portrayed the flights as mere "billionaire joyrides" Perhaps they were - but they were also proof, if proof were needed, that when innovative space travel is on the menu, where there is a will there is almost certainly a way.
