The Congressional Budget Office has drawn up a series of options for reducing the deficit in US government spending, one being the cancellation of the SLS/Orion programme and abandoning the International Space Station in 2020. By doing so, the CBO calculates that NASA could save $76 billion over the next 10 years. It bases this on the fact that human space flight presently costs NASA approximately 40% of its annual budget. This money (on average $7.7 billion annually) presently goes on the International Space Station, subsidies to commercial contenders for cargo and human transport services, and the Space Launch System and associated Orion spacecraft. It points out that under current legislation approved by Congress, the US will cease its participation in the ISS and that the money now spent on that will be directed to SLS/Orion deep-space missions.
