On 8 January the Obama administration gave its blessing to an extension to the life of the International Space Station, carrying US funding for the facility from 2020 to 2024. Although this is only half the eight-year extension sought by prime US contractor Boeing and some congressional and scientific lobbies, it is considered a step in the right direction by those who claim the ISS is only just getting into its stride and that it needs more time to attract new experimenters and provide achievable returns in results and data. Currently, NASA spends $3 billion annually on the station and three of the five-team partnership (US, Russia, Europe, Japan and Canada) have yet to decide whether they wish to continue funding the ISS after 2020. The European Space Agency is facing a period of stringent belt-tightening and Japan is considering whether it can justify further investment in the ISS. Canada too is facing one of its most severe budget constraints with the space agency required to make further cost cuts.
