It was 2.58 am on 4 July 1997, long before dark at its landing site on the Red Planet, when Mars Pathfinder touched the surface of a region known as Arres Vallis, south of Chryse Planitia. It bounced to a stop at least 15 times, encapsulated in a nest of 12 airbags to protect it from impact at a speed of 50.5 km/hr (31.3 mph) that initially tossed it 15.2 m (50 ft) back up into the rarefied atmosphere. The previous two Mars landers had each been successful.
