This month we have more than our average share of stories from the engineering world of rockets and launch vehicles, stories involving the UK, ESA and NASA. As the British government stumps up funds for the next four-year phase in development of the SABRE engine, all bets are off as to when the world will see the first single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO) take off, conduct orbit operations, and return to land at a conventional runway. It could well be within 15 years, which in the aerospace business is much less time than it takes to get a modern combat aircraft from concept to rubber on the runway.
