Sir, Irene Reinhild Agnes Elisabeth Bredt was born a little over 100 years ago on 24 April 1911. As a schoolgirl she saw the rocket-propelled car 'OPEL-RAK-1' and Fritz Lang's movie Woman on the Moon, and thus became interested in rocket science. But in the long tradition of her family from the Rhineland region her studies were laid out on a broad scientific base. She received her doctorate (in natural science) in 1936. Her thesis was entitled 'X-rays from Rare Earths'. For her first job she was attracted by a tender with few details of the little known Research Center for Aviation at Trauen, Germany.
