Sir, I write in support of the proposed amendments to the rules for membership of the BIS (Spaceflight, April 2011, p56). In my view, the amended rules still require candidates to show demonstrable evidence of achievement and experience; all of which takes a great deal of time. Thus the rules continue to protect the Society and the Fellowship against casual infiltration by uncommitted individuals and pressure groups aspiring for a platform. At the same time, BIS members lacking formal paper qualifications or experience for outright election to the Fellowship can now aspire to become Fellows by 'getting stuck in' and contributing to the work of the society over an extended period.
