One of the most cherished, memorable and evocative episodes in human spaceflight history occurred on Christmas Eve 1968, almost 240,000 miles from Earth. As three American astronauts circled the ancient Moon for the first time in history - surely one of the most audacious and dangerous undertakings of all time - they read a simple but profound Christmas message to all the people "on the good Earth". They understood the significance of their flight; not only was it a precursor to what would be the first successful Moon landings the following year, but it virtually dashed the hopes of the Soviet Union, which had hoped to beat the United States to that prized, dust-covered and cratered objective.
