Sir, I attended the first of the BIS 'futures' meetings at the Society's headquarters on the 26 March and was impressed by the enthusiasm of those who participated and their determination to see the society survive and prosper. But I have to concede to being shocked and depressed by the extent of the financial crisis which the BIS currently faces. The BIS was already facing financial difficulties but the additional burden imposed upon it by the problems encountered after it hosted the 2008 International Astronautical Congress in Glasgow have placed the Society in an extremely precarious situation - and the reality is that a new radical approach is required if the BIS is survive.
