Nasa marked 50 years of US manned spaceflight on 4 May 2011 with the unveiling of two new stamps at Kennedy Space Center's Visitor Complex, writes Gerard van de Haar. Both stamps are dedicated to Mercury - one to the first US manned spaceflight by Mercury astronaut Alan Shepard 50 years ago, and the other to NASA's MESSENGER unmanned probe which entered Mercury orbit in March (Spaceflight, June 2011, p214). Both signify America's significant advancement in manned and unmanned space exploration.
