This is an exclusive essay on the rivalry of the two giants of the Soviet space programme, Sergey Korolev and Vladimir Chelomey, by one of Chelomey's leading designers, Vladimir Abramovich Polyachenko, who played a key role in many of Chelomey's most important projects in the 1960s and 1970s. Polyachenko (born 1929) is a specialist in the area of rocket construction, and production and testing of rocket-space systems. He graduated from the NE Bauman Moscow Higher Technical School and the MV Lomonosov Moscow State University. He is a Candidate of Technical Sciences. In 1952, he began working in the design bureau of Vladimir Chelomey. From 1959, working as the main lead designer of themes (projects) at the design bureau of General Designer and Academician Vladimir Chelomey, he took direct part in the first space projects there, in the development and launch of Polet, the world's first manuoevring space vehicle, and the Almaz heavy orbital piloted station. He is an honoured tester of space technology, and the author of a number of publications on the scientific and design activities of Academician Vladimir Chelomey. He is also the author of the memoir Na morye i v kosmose (On the Sea and In Space) dedicated to Chelomey and his team.
