The usual review of European Space Agency missions and events was given by ESA director general Jean-Jacques Dordain at this year's Paris Air Show, writes Mark Williamson. Much of his presentation was 'business as usual', but when asked, in the context of the Space Shuttle's retirement, about ESA's plans for delivering its astronauts to the ISS, he was more forthright. "We didn't discuss a joint transportation policy enough," Dordain admitted. "There was no discussion among the partners about what we collectively needed." For the next few years ESA, like NASA, will be reliant on the Russians to transport its astronauts. As for any future manned derivative of the Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV), Dordain would only say that ESA was in "discussion" with NASA.
