Sir, I found the recent article on Project Icarus (Spaceflight, April 2011, p140) very inspirational with respect to aiming high whilst moving forward in small tangible steps. In particular the VASIMR propulsion system definitely seems to be a step forward in a very practical way. Progress in space seems to move forward in a very ad hoc way despite billions being invested. Some of that investment has moved us forward in terms of human achievement or scientific returns whilst some, frankly, may as well have been thrown down the drain. To anyone who wants to move forward in some sort of logical manner it is frustrating to view the piecemeal progress that is happening today — although it must be acknowledged that things are moving forward albeit in a haphazard manner.
