摘要

This April saw the 50th anniversary of the first human spaceflight by Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. Twenty years later, in May 1981, Romanian cosmonaut Dorin Prunariu became the first of his nation to enter space, marking the end of the first phase of the Interkosmos programme. Under this programme, many cosmonauts from allies of the USSR travelled into space in Soviet craft. This greatly widened the nationalities of space travellers beyond the Soviets and Americans who had dominated human spaceflight up to 1978. Here, Dr Dumitru-Dorin Prunariu, who is now the chair of COPUOS, the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, gives his own personal reflections on the significance of Gagarin's flight.
