A year on from the tragic loss of Space Shuttle Columbia and the lives of the seven astronauts onboard, Spaceflight author and NASA contractor Ken Peek shares a personal account of the events that occurred after 1 February 2003. There's an old saying, "be careful of what you wish for, because you just might get it." I was sitting at home in my easy chair in November 2002 reading Howard Stansfield's excellent article "All That Remains" (Air & Space Smithsonian, Volume 17, No 4, November 2002), and wondered what it might be like to tromp around the wilderness looking for aircraft wrecks, but was doubtful that I'd ever get the chance. After all, I have a nice comfortable office job and live in a typical suburban home. Not much chance of aircraft recovery in that setting.
