With significant participation by UK scientists and engineers, and a promised appearance of Matt Taylor at the UKSEDS conference to be held 28 February to 1 March in London, it was fitting that the Rosetta team should now release a new set of stunning images of the Comet 67P Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The Rosetta spacecraft carries 11 scientific instruments and the OSIRIS science camera has so far mapped 70% of the surface area which has been illuminated by the Sun and provided new and exciting detail. Very precise measurement shows that the small lobe is 2.6 × 2.1 × 1.6 km (1.6 × 1.3 × 1 miles) and the large lobe is 4.1 × 3.3 × 1.8 km (2.5 × 2 × 1.1 miles) in size with a volume of 21.4 km~3 (5.134 miles~3). The Radio Science Instrument has provided a mass of 10 billion tonnes which computes to a mean density of 0.47 g/cm~3. By integrating the assumed compositional structure of water, ice and dust, the overall mean density is judged to be 1.5-2.0 g/cm~3. By comparison the mean density of the Moon is 3.3 g/cm~3 while the Earth has a mean density of 5.5 g/cm~3.
