While no specific plan exists for a defined schedule, both European and Chinese space officials have announced that they are working toward placing ESA astronauts on a Chinese space station within the next decade or so. While NASA astronauts remain restricted to flying on Russian Soyuz spacecraft until at least 2017, ESA is to focus its future human space flight activity to low Earth orbit on Sino-European cooperation. In that way it may provide a broader based future for European space expertise than will be possible for the United States to achieve alone. And it may place Europe as the world leader in human space flight capability through a much broader and more diverse involvement at an international level than any other space-faring group.
