The Proton launch vehicle, manufactured and operated by the Khrunichev State Research and Production Space Center, is becoming a serious rival of the Ariane 4 and 5 rockets of Arianespace. On 20 November 1998, it was launched to put into low orbit the 20 ton Zarya module, the first core element of the International Space Station. Theo Pirard attended the successful launch of Astra 2A, on 30 August 1998, and a day later visited the impressive factory at Moscow where Proton rockets are made. It lies near the Fill Park, just 10 minutes (by car or by metro) from Red Square. He provides readers with a photographic account of bis visit starting with the very large integration hall, in which parts for some eight Proton rockets were being assembled.
