摘要

This article introduces three papers in a special issue that considers new directions relating to spatio-temporal theories for environmental, urban, and social questions. This work gives an overview of some recent perspectives on temporal GIS research including for example, cognition of geospatial dynamics, challenges of big data for urban and environmental sciences, representing mobility, and new ideas about time and space-time in geographic information science among others. The three papers consider topics including space-time pattern analysis and information retrieval, human mobility patterns and urban dynamics from mobile phone data, and spatio-temporal change as it is relates to administrative boundaries.
