Pulp digesters are large pressurized vessels used to delignify wood chips and produce chemical pulp. Successful operation requires the creation of uniform liquor flow through a packed chip column, particularly for implementation of modern cooking strategies. As digester size has increased to achieve higher production rates, the ability to create uniform liquor flow through the processing zones has been questioned. A number of problems, including accelerated digester corrosion, fluctuations in the degree of delignification and poor washing efficiency, have all been linked In nonuniform liquor flow in the digester. Here, we explore the use of electrical resistance tomography for visualizing liquor flow through a chip column in a geometrically scaled model digester. An eight-plane, sixteen electrodes per plane, sensor array permitted three-dimensional time-resolved reconstruction of the liquor flow through the chip column. The technique was validated by simultaneously imaging a dyed tracer flow in water.
