Yield stress defines the condition at which a material flows when subject to stress and therefore is an important property of pulp suspensions in process flows. Values of yield stress of pulp suspensions have been measured in past studies, but the influence of fibre properties on this flow property remains in question. In this study, we measured yield stresses for a range of pulps of differing species pulped by differing methods. We evaluated correlations between yield stress and consistency, fibre length and coarseness. The measured yield stresses were found to correlate well with consistency for individual species using two fitted parameters specific to each pulp. However, no correlation to fibre properties of comparable accuracy was found. Given the wide range of pulps examined, we concluded that the use of the consistency correlation with values of parameters selected for the pulp in question gave the most accurate estimate of yield stress.
