The effects of pulp fluidization on fibre properties were investigated in a novel laboratory device enabling pulp fluidization trials at conditions corresponding to the ones in actual mill processes. The results of fluidization trials were compared to industrial fluidization in the oxygen stage mixer. The behavior of fibres in the proximity to the mixing area was also investigated using a new video imaging system. The results from the trials and video imaging showed that during fluidization, the behaviour of fibres in the proximity to the mixing area is highly dependant on the fluidization intensity. If the intensity is high enough, it causes fibres to straighten and orientate with the flow allowing them to flow freely. However, if the fluidization intensity is not sufficient, only flocks will be set in motion, and fibres will remain disoriented inside the flocks thus being subjected to compressive and bending stresses. The study of industrial fluidization in oxygen mixer showed that the mixer in this case caused fibre straightening that was measured as slightly decreased level of fibre deformations after mixer, and did not affect pulp strength properties in other respects.
