Out-of-Plane Shear of Paperboard under High Compressive Loads

In this paper, existing equipment for measuring out-of-plane shear in thin compliant materials was extended with anew clamp that enabled shear testing under high compressive loads. The equipment was applied for testing of a commercial paperboard under various uniaxial and biaxial loadings. The new setup proved to work satisfactorily. In out-of-plane shear testing under a constant compressive load, the paperboard material eventually reached a frictional type of behaviour, i.e. a constant shear load at constant normal load. At low compressive loads, this occurred after a peak in the shear stress-strain curve while, at high compressive loads, it was reached asymptotically without a peak load. The magnitude of the peak shear stress was shown to be a function of the plastic deformation in the thickness direction of the paperboard material. The elastic part of the deformation in compression showed a nonlinear behaviour that resembles that of other porous materials.
