Professor Dr.-Ing. Hans Paul Hougardy, head of the working group. Steel Development in the Department of Metal Forming of the Max-Planck-Institut fuer Eisenfor-schung GmbH in Duesseldorf, is celebrating his 65th birthday. This birthday is the occasion to look at the background and the development of this well-known scientist and at the influence which his research work has had on steel production, steel fabrication and steel application. H. P. Hougardy comes from the "Ruhr-region" and has been connected with the steel industry since childhood days. His father was head of the Magnet-Company of DEW in Dortmund. After finishing his secondary school education he therefore studied Ferrous Metallurgy at the RWTH, Aachen. His diploma-thesis was concerned with the possibilities of removing tin, antimony and arsen from liquid steel by blowing with pure oxygen. In 1957 he passed his final examinations with distinction.
