The northern section of the Dortmund-Ems-Canal (DEK), also known as "Schleusentreppe Rheine", includes on a leg of 29 km the big locks Bevergern, Rodde, Venhaus, Hesselte and Gleesen. The structures are approx. 100 years old and must be replaced by new constructions in the next years. The new locks receive chambers with an effective length of 140 m and a width of 12.50 m. The locks Bevergern and Gleesen at the beginning and the end of the section are planned as locks with saving basins and as massive constructions.The planning approval procedures in both federal states, standardization requirements as well as superior constraints from the soil management have significant influence on the ongoing planning and contracting processes.As an additional requirement and after the finishing of the draft planning the latest results on lime dissolving carbonic acid had to be included. Therefor the planning and tender documents had to be basically redesigned, especially for the anchoring elements of the excavation pit, the saving basin and the waterfront walls of the exit basins. These subsoil indicated modifications had inevitable impact on tender dates as well as on construction time and costs.The locks will be in each case tendered in three up to six contract units. Therefor the intermediate construction results of each contract must be clearly defined. The lock Gleesen was the first to be built within the scope of four contract units. The commissioning of the contract unit 2 - lock with auxiliary structures - took place in July 2018.Besides the building part the construction companies are commissioned with the execution planning (exception: hydraulic steel structures). The amount of boundary conditions results in highest demands for the tender documents (permitting and private-law demands, geotechnics, hydrogeology, calculation basis, minimum requirements for alternative tenders etc.) as well as for the contractual design (time limits, interfaces, approvals etc.).
