摘要

Recently I attended a lecture in the Department of Philosophy at my university entitled "What is Byzantine philosophy?," delivered by a guest speaker from the Republic of Macedonia. The speaker's job was to choose a subject which would best represent the characteristic interests in ancient philosophy in that part of the world. The title and subsequently the argument of the lecture and the ensuing discussion reminded me of the divisive attitude which still exists towards the centuries of philosophical thought following Plato and Aristotle. Those who have chosen to focus their work on the post-Classical period of ancient philosophy need no convincing whether or not one can talk about Byzantine philosophy.
