摘要

Song Yingxing, whom Joseph Needham has called "Diderot of China," is known mainly as the author of the Heaven's work in opening things (Tiangong kaiwu), published in 1637. But he also published five other works around the same time: a treatise on heavens (Talks about heaven); one on qi, the basic stuff constituting every object and underlying every phenomenon (On qi); a collection of poems (Poetry of yearnings); a political critique (An oppositionist's deliberations); and a work on philology now lost (Return to orthodoxy). Overshadowed by the Heaven's work, these other works have not been given much attention. Moreover, studies done so far on the Heaven's work have mostly dealt with the technical content of the book, which has been praised as a "systematic", "conclusive" treatise of the Chinese agriculture and production techniques up to the Ming times(1368-1643).
