In this book, addressed mainly to philosophers of science, Brad Wray presents Thomas Kuhn's later writings as a solution to a problem created by Kuhn's early writings. The problem is the estrangement of sociologists of science from philosophers of science, a consequence of their divergent responses to Kuhn's Structure of scientific revolutions (1962) (henceforth referred to as Structure). To many, Kuhn's book seemed to leave little room for nature, evidence, or argument in the resolution of scientific disputes. To sociologists this was a license to explore the role of other factors, especially social interests, in the formation of scientific consensuses. To philosophers it was a menace, "a threatening but ultimately indefensible position against which they would define their own positions" (p. 4). Wray hopes to end the deadlock. To this end he describes and defends Kuhn's mature epistemology of science, arguing that it helps us to understand both the rationality of science and the role of social factors in securing its rationality.
