Fred D'Agostinos's new book has a notable leitmotif: Thomas Kuhn's 'essential tension'. By taking up the title of a 1959 paper by Kuhn, which returned as the title of the 1977 collection of Kuhn's essays, D'Agostino places himself squarely in a certain tradition. The main title of his book, naturalizing epistemology, indicates where he wants to move from there, namely towards a naturalization of that topic central to Kuhn's philosophy of science.
