摘要

In this ambitious and clearly written book, Mumford argues that while there are 'laws' in scientific theories (i.e., claims that are central to those theories), there are no laws in nature. According to Mumford, laws could not do the job in nature that they are posited as doing: governing the properties possessed by various entities. Moreover, nothing needs to do that job, since the connections that laws supposedly forge are already built into properties themselves. Mumford's 'realist lawlessness' deems there to be real necessities in nature, contrary to the views of Humeans (such as David Lewis), but these necessities are not supplied by laws (contrary to the views of David Armstrong, for example).
