The present discussion about the limits of local history and the re-appraisal of Gaston Bachelard's dictum that the history of science is not a 'museum' of episodes has created a favourable climate for books which experiment with historiographical approaches in order to outline in a novel way larger features of the history of science, technology, and medicine. Together with Michel Foucault and Thomas Kuhn, Bach-elard is a theoretical inspiration for John V. Pickstone, who has written an ambitious history of science, technology, and medicine (STM) that covers more than five centuries―without focussing, like most of the earlier and more recent large narratives, on the history of natural philosophy and physics as a model for all sciences. In his attempt to illuminate types or ways of knowing and making in the history of STM, Pickstone also considers historical material from natural history, biomedicine, biology, geology, chemistry, and the social sciences. His method of adding new facets to his 'big picture' of STM, which cuts across disciplinary boundaries and ranges from the sixteenth-century Renaissance to the twentieth century, makes impressive reading. His book is one of the most stimulating historiographical contributions of recent years and deserves close reading and critical analysis.
