Ever since the Critique of pure reason was published, Kant's notion of the thing in itself has provoked puzzlement and controversy. How could Kant postulate the existence of, and the affection of our sensibility by, things in themselves but claim that we cannot know anything about these things in themselves? An answer to this question lies at the heart of understanding Kantian thought. Kant's aim in the Critique is to give a critical examination of the possibility of human cognition. His result is the theory of transcendental idealism, central to which are the notion of the thing in itself and the corresponding notion of the phenomenon. Kant limits the realm of knowledge to the phenomenal world; things in themselves remain outside it. Getting clear about these notions and their relation is therefore necessary for understanding what it is, according to Kant, that we are capable of knowing, and how. In her book Kantian humility, Rae Langton offers a metaphysical interpretation of Kant's notion of the thing in itself and a solution to the "old problem". But while Langton's interpretation provides an answer to the above question, it poses a fundamental challenge for a transcendental idealist reading of Kant. In the present essay I assess the adequacy of Langton's argument. I propose the following criterion for adequacy of textual interpretations. The interpretation needs to make sense of the text concerned with the problem under consideration. But it should not do so at the cost of damaging the coherence of the text as a whole.
