How thick must the installation of the pipework in a solar system be? There is a lot of disagreement on this question in the industry. For thermosiphon systems some manufacturers do without any insulation at all. With pumped systems 10,13 or 19mm of insulation are often used (table 1). The relevant question is whether the heat losses from the pipework are significant and the additional cost of insulation can therefore be justified. Roland Baumann, Managing Director of Aeroline Tube Systems Baumann GmbH from Germany, is one of the proponents of better insulation. He believes that good insulation pays for itself within two to three years through the reduction in heat losses. Special requirements apply to the German market, where the regulations on saving energy (Energie-einsparverordnung, EnEV) require a minimum insulation thickness. At the beginning of this year an expert committee from the responsible government ministers for construction made it clear that these minimum requirements also apply to the pipes between the solar collectors and the heat-storage tanks. For the commonly used pipes of up to 22 mm diameter, the EnEV prescribes a minimum insulation thickness of 20 mm for material with a thermal conductance of 0.035 W/mK. Since the EPDM synthetic rubberthat is usually used has a higher conductance than this, the EnEV requires that the insulating thickness of this material is suitably increased.
