On 14 January it was completed: The prototype of the Vestas V164-8.0. The first of these 8 MW giants now stands at the National Test Centre for Large Wind Turbines in 0sterild, Denmark. The nacelle had already been assembled on 20 December 2013, and during the night between 13 and 14 January, the weather conditions finally allowed the rotor blades to be installed. In the coming weeks, Vestas will put the system into operation. The V164-8.0 is designed from a power plant perspective, helping to drive profitability to new levels in offshore wind. The ratio between the 164 m rotor and the 8.0 MW generator is designed to suit the harsh conditions in the North Sea area. Fewer turbines are needed to produce the required amount of energy - reducing the cost of transportation, foundations, installation, cabling, service and maintenance.
