Last December's surprise release of former oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky, after ten years in prison, has renewed questions about the causes of his arrest and liberation, and the ways in which these developments reflect the evolution of Putin's Russia. Richard Sakwa, professor at the University of Kent, has produced a comprehensive, compelling account of the events that led to Russia's wealthiest man becoming its most famous prisoner. Highlighting the personal, political and commercial aspects of this complex case, he reminds us of how intimately Khodorkovsky's fate was connected to that of Putin, and how their personal antagonism set in motion a series of decisions that led Russia to reject the freewheeling capitalism of the 1990s, in favour of managed democracy and a renationalisation of the commanding heights of the economy.
