China's elite tend to respond to the country's environmental crisis by arguing that while the situation may be dire, there is reason for optimism. After all, a compassionate and respectful attitude towards nature has been deeply embedded in Chinese traditional thinking since 700 BCE. The unity of humanity and nature, or tianren heyi, is a key concept in Chinese traditional philosophy.
