Fouad Ajami, a long-time observer of the Middle East, passed away in June 2014. This slim essay thus constitutes his last major published work. Ajami spent much of his life defying the conventions of his field. He attributed the maladies of the Arab world to its ruling class rather than to lingering colonial influences and American interventions. This gained him much opprobrium among the professoriate. He remained unabashedly and at times too uncritically supportive of the American enterprise in the Middle East. And he became a vocal proponent of the invasion of Iraq, the reverberations of which will now outlive him.
