Milan Kundera, the Czech writer, once suggested that a key difference between big nations and small nations is that the latter cannot take their own survival for granted. 'The small nation', he wrote, is one whose very existence may be put in question at any moment; a small nation can disappear and it knows it. A French, a Russian, and an English man is not used to asking questions about the very survival of his nation. His anthems speak only of grandeur and eternity. The Polish anthem, however, starts with the verse: 'Poland has not yet perished...'. Similarly, Lee Kuan Yew, the founding father of the very small nation of Singapore, once said: To understand Singapore ... you've got to start off with an improbable story: It should not exist. What you see today - the superstructure of a modern city ... could easily disintegrate.
