Rajiv Chandrasekaran, a senior correspondent and associate editor for the Washington Post who authored a similarly themed book on the war in Iraq, wondered if 'we could get Afghanistan right. Had we learned from our failures? ... Confronted with a stubborn insurgency in a primitive land, could officials in Washington adapt? Could we wage a good war?' (p. 11). Little America is the name Afghans gave to the area surrounding Lashkar Gah in Helmand Province after an enormous US development effort from the 1950s to the 1970s. Chandrasekaran tells the story of how initial optimism concerning the effort to transform the region economically and socially foundered due to religious conservatism, armed conflict and the limits of Helmand's hydrology and soil.
