Recent wars contain many examples of parties to armed conflict misunderstanding the nature of the war and the factors that drive violence and undermine security. In Conflict Analysis, Matthew Levinger, visiting professor of international affairs at the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University and previous director of the academy for genocide prevention at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, has written a book meant to 'serve as a practical reference and field guide for those who need to understand and communicate persuasively about threats of organized violence' (p. 2). Levinger has synthesised the vast body of literature on conflict prevention and management, and has done so in a way that enables readers to apply theory to complex problems, and identify opportunities to preserve or restore peace.
