Some countries are born lucky; some have luck thrust upon them. Modern Australia had an inauspicious start as a European penal colony, but the dry red soil that left many convicts and early pastoralists struggling to survive has long since revealed mineral riches. Indeed, as Australia has floated on a resources boom above the ongoing global financial crisis, some local intellectuals have begun to ask if the nation isn't too overwhelmed by its latest windfall to quite know what to do with it.
