摘要

The Egyptian Revolution remains a work in progress, to put it mildly. Almost a year and a half after the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak, Egypt got its first-ever civilian, Islamist, elected head of state. But, as of the end of June 2012, the first freely elected parliament had been dissolved and a large question mark hung over the new president's power and prospects. Even if the victory of Muhammad Morsi over the military's candidate, Ahmad Shafiq, is interpreted as a victory for the revolution over the remnants of the old order, the military bureaucratic regime that has buttressed the Egyptian state since 1952 remained in place, ruling by martial law, and with many strings to its bow. Senior military officers have found themselves playing a political role to which they are unaccustomed.
