The challenge posed by the resurgence of religion and its increased role in world politics to the previously dominant 'secularisation thesis' has been observable at least since the Iranian Revolution and the rise of the religious right in several 'liberal' or politically secular countries, including the United States and Israel. It was announced with great fanfare in Gilles Kepel's bestseller The Revenge of God (1991), which is curiously absent from the bibliography of God's Century.
