The motto of this very ambitious and informative book could be 'ideas have consequences'. It attempts to highlight the link between the intellectual and the political histories of twentieth-century Europe, a time and a place particularly dominated by the struggle of ideologies. The intellectual and practical dimensions are nicely represented at the beginning of the book, which shows the great sociologist Max Weber's reactions to the First World War and the Russian revolution.
